Kelly Cates was asked about the likelihood of Roy Keane going for the vacant Manchester United role in the latest iteration of the Mail’s podcast Soccer A-Z.
Erik ten Hag was handed his marching orders on Monday in the wake of a torrid start to the season which has left United languishing 14th in the Premier League table.
A 2-1 defeat by West Ham on Sunday afternoon proved the final nail in the coffin for the former manager, who was given a vote of confidence by the Man United hierarchy ahead of the start of the season.
Despite assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooy being given the role in the interim – and Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim the increasingly likely long-term appointment – there is still no permanent head coach set to take over from Ten Hag.
Sky Sports presenter Cates regularly shares the small screen with the Red Devils legend, and as such, felt as if she has a good read on what Keane might do if he was given the opportunity to take over at Old Trafford.
But Cates was at first evasive about the possibility of Keane taking up the top job – 13 years after leaving his last managerial role at Ipswich Town.
