In Wednesday’s 4-0 win over Mainz in the DFB-Pokal, Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala earned his first professional hat trick. With a mere 45 touches, Musiala dominated the match in a variety of ways. He completed 25 of 28 passes, won seven of nine ground duels, and drew five fouls.
Bayern boss Vincent Kompany offered an interesting take on Musiala’s rise to stardom.
“Of course Jamal can score goals,” said Kompany (via @iMiaSanMia). “But I think there’s a lot of focus today on goals, goals, goals. Because Messi and Ronaldo do that. But there were a lot of fantastic players in the past like Zidane or Ronaldinho who didn’t score a lot of goals but changed games. I think we shouldn’t judge Jamal only on goals. He has an influence on the course of the game. As I said, there were a lot of unbelievable players in the past – Jamal can become one of them, even if he doesn’t score 1,000 goals.”
As a reference point, neither Ronaldo (900) nor Messi (849) have even reached 1,000 career goals.
“Regardless of his goals, he can always make the difference,” said Joshua Kimmich (via @iMiaSanMia). “He’s tough to handle and can break the lines in midfield with his dribbling. The fact he’s now scoring more often is even better for us.”
As noted by Kimmich, Musiala was instrumental in the match by dropping deep enough in possession to help Bayern break Mainz’s press and immediately create favorable scenarios in the final third.
