Former Chelsea and England manager Glenn Hoddle has suggested Cole Palmer has the potential to be a better player than Manchester City’s Phil Foden.
Despite winning the PFA Player of the Year and the FWA Footballer of the Year last season, Hoddle says the fact that Foden has not produced the goods at international level has led him to question how good he is compared to Palmer:
“I’ve always rated Phil Foden as a top player. He hasn’t played so well in the Euros and hasn’t done what I thought he would do. I think Foden is a special talent but its whether he can reproduce what he’s doing at City in an England shirt.”
“Cole Palmer looks unbelievable. He’s an interesting one because if he stays unattached to the game, because for me he’s a player that plays in the playground, he could elevate himself to being a superstar and could go ahead of Foden in many ways.”
Palmer’s record for England isn’t outstanding
Hoddle is definitely correct to point out that Foden hasn’t always performed well on the international stage, but he is not alone in that regard.
Palmer has 9 caps for the Three Lions, and his return of 2 goals and 1 assist is not anything to write home about. You would have to say both players have so far saved their best performances for their clubs.
Foden has produced the goods for City, year in year out
Palmer has been in excellent form since moving to Chelsea at the start of last season but Hoddle and others seem to have very short memories.
Foden has been a world-class player since becoming a regular starter for City five years ago. He has scored 89 goals and provided 55 assists in 281 senior appearances.
On top of that, the midfielder has 18 major honours, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League.
