Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies has had his doubters — but head coach Vincent Kompany is not one of them.
The pacy Canadian international was a teenage sensation for the Bavarians in his early years, but seems to be dogged lately by questions over whether his contributions to the team are important enough to justify a bumper extension.
For Kompany, though, Davies is aces.
“I heard that he wasn’t so good last season. But I didn’t notice any of that. He’s an absolute top player,” Kompany said at the midweek press conference ahead of Saturday’s match vs. Union Berlin (as captured via @iMiaSanMia). “He should continue this way, but he can also still develop. He can go up a level. That’s what I enjoy as a coach. His consistency is also very good at the moment.”
Davies was an influential presence on the pitch at Mainz on Wednesday, supplying Harry Kane’s assist for Bayern’s opening goal just two minutes into the match and getting his own assist for Leroy Sané just before the half in a 4-0 DFB-Pokal romp for the Bavarians. Can the left-back continue in this way in the run of games ahead?
