Jose Mourinho inadvertently offered West Ham United some really good advice six months ago, but the Hammers owners completely ignored it.
West Ham were actually linked with a move to appoint Jose Mourinho to replace David Moyes at the London Stadium back in the summer, but the Hammers owners settled on Julen Lopetegui in the end.
Mourinho was actually said to be a leading candidate to replace Moyes, but there was another man who the Hammers fans really wanted.
West Ham were within touching distance of appointing Ruben Amorim at the end of April, before David Sullivan got cold feet over paying his £8.5m release clause.
It has since been claimed that it wasn’t anything to do with paying the money, but more so the fact that Sullivan didn’t want to ‘take a risk’ on appointing an ‘unproven’ manager.
That now looks like an awfully poor decision.
However, it was one that Sullivan really didn’t have to make – he should have listened to Jose.
West Ham owners should’ve listened to Jose Mourinho in May
The former Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Inter Milan, Porto and Tottenham boss offered some really sage advice to the Hammers board before the summer.
But nobody at the London Stadium was listening it seems.
Mourinho spoke to Mais Futebol back in May of this year, and absolutely raved about his countryman Amorim.
He said, “What can I tell you? I like him [Amorim] as a person, I like him as a coach.“
“I think he has the conditions to be able to coach in any league and he has the conditions to be able to coach in any club.“
“But he’s in a good league and he’s in a big club.“
“The decision is his and it will be up to the clubs that want him or not, to convince him with more or less arguments.“
“What is clear from my side is that I like the person and I like the coach.“
If only Sullivan would have listened to what Mourinho had to say about the 39-year-old.
In my opinion, there’s no evidence to suggest that Ruben Amorim will be anything other than an outstanding success at Manchester United.
Outdated philosophy has cost West Ham dearly
He’s won two league titles with Sporting, and the philosophy that we need to appoint a ‘proven’ manager is just so outdated.
West Ham are a club that needs to be bringing in highly talented young managers BEFORE they prove themselves at the highest level.
Otherwise, we will not be able to get them in the first place.
West Ham opted for the supposed ‘safe choice’ in the end by appointing Julen Lopetegui. The thing is though, I actually believe the Spaniard was a more risky hire than Amorim would’ve been, albeit a lot cheaper one, granted.
If we are to progress as a club, the West Ham owners need to get on board with the fact that they can’t continue to ‘play it safe’ anymore.
Some of the most inspired managerial appointments in the past have been accompanied by risk, just look at what Chelsea did after bringing in Jose Mourinho back in 2004…
