There’s still been no word from ‘captain’ Jarrod Bowen after West Ham United lost to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
Even if Jarrod Bowen comes out later today and speaks, it won’t be good enough in my eyes.
He should have addressed reporters immediately after the final whistle.
The 27-year-old was named as the new West Ham club captain by Julen Lopetegui back in the summer – a decision that was highly questionable at the time.
I think Lopetegui got the call wrong. He was said to be weighing up whether to appoint summer signing Max Kilman as skipper at the time, and he should’ve gone with the former Wolves man.
Bowen is a very good player, a great one in fact, but he’s in no way shape or form a leader, neither on the pitch or off of it.
The ex-Hull City attacker doesn’t talk enough during games, and you hardly ever see him in the referee’s ear.
When the going gets tough, and he needs to gee up his teammates, he’s nowhere to be seen.
Bowen just doesn’t strike me as a very outgoing person. Sure, he leads by example with his committed performances but that isn’t enough to justify being given the captain’s armband in my eyes.
After the big defeat to Forest on Saturday, the Hammers fans needed a leader to come out and tell some home truths.
But Bowen was nowhere to be seen…
Radio silence from Jarrod Bowen after Nottingham Forest defeat
The Hammers were awful at the City Ground, truly awful.
However, after the match we only heard from the gaffer and Lukasz Fabianski.
Where on earth is our so-called ‘captain’ Bowen??
One of the skipper’s main duties after a defeat should always be to face up to the media, and offer explanations to the fans.
Jarrod Bowen clearly hasn’t got that in him though, and he never should have been named as captain of West Ham.
The other problem I have with the decision to give him the armband is that it actually seems to have hindered his form this season.
Maybe there’s simply too much pressure on his shoulders right now.
Whilst changing captains midway through a season could seriously upset the applecart, a switch in the summer will be an absolute must as far as I’m concerned.
West Ham need a proper leader on and off the pitch, and we just haven’t got that with Jarrod Bowen right now.
