Edson Alvarez has issued a grovelling apology after his brainless sending off in West Ham’s defeat at Nottingham Forest but with one big omission.
West Ham’s £34m Mexican midfielder Edson Alvarez has been in and out of the team this year.
He ended last season being benched and criticised by David Moyes, who said Alvarez could not play 90 minutes in the Premier League.
Alvarez has started life under Julen Lopetegui in and out of the Hammers side too.
After a strong start on signing from Ajax, the midfielder has been nowhere near those levels for West Ham since.
Alvarez has angered Hammers fans by persistently talking up a potential move away.
Any chance of leaving West Ham in the summer was scuppered by an injury in the Copa America.
Alvarez has been one of West Ham’s worst performing players this season.
Last week’s Match of the Day panel labelled Alvarez slow, immobile and not up to Prem standards for a central midfielder.
Heavy-legged and slow, Alvarez struggles to compete with his opponents and was completely outshone by Ryan Yates at Forest.
He has also become a complete liability as a yellow and red card magnet.
Alvarez’s painful lack of pace and athleticism means he continually finds himself making desperate last ditch lunges.
Just as he did at the end of the first half at Forest, needlessly picking up two bookings in five minutes to leave the Hammers in the lurch.
Alvarez makes glaring omission in grovelling apology
West Ham had an eight on two situation and the challenge was completely unnecessary.
It was not for the first time Alvarez has let the team down this season either.
He was also stupidly sent off at Liverpool, resulting in West Ham going on to lose what had been a tight cup tie 5-1.
Lopetegui’s reaction to Alvarez as he left the pitch spoke volumes.
The manager also refused to mention him by name as he blamed the defeat on Alvarez afterwards.
It did little to play down talk of unrest in the Hammers camp.
When substituted against Bournemouth in the cup, Alvarez was seen on camera reacting angrily towards Lopetegui.
There have been suggestions West Ham should sell Alvarez in January given his actions.
Now West Ham star Alvarez has made a glaring omission in a grovelling apology.
As the dust settles on the embarrassing 3-0 defeat at Forest, pressure has piled back on Lopetegui’s shoulders.
West Ham boss left out of Alvarez apology
There has been claim and counter claim about his future.
Speculation abounds that a bad defeat at home to Everton could see the Spaniard sacked.
Particularly with a two-week international break looming.
Now Alvarez has issued a brief apology on social media.
But rather interestingly – and perhaps tellingly – he has left his manager out of it.
Instead Alvarez has just aimed his apology at his teammates and the club’s fans.
“Tough day for me,” Alvarez said on Instagram Stories.
“I apologise to my teammates and fans. Falling, learning and getting up.”
The apology comes across as a bit ‘woe is me’ in all honesty.
But it is at least an acknowledgement from Alvarez.
It says everything that he has not included the manager in his apology.
There seems to be a lack of respect in the squad for Lopetegui.
If that wasn’t clear from some of the performances and reactions of players, it is from this post.
Throw in the Mohammed Kudus situation after his bust-up with the head coach at Brentford and implosion at Spurs and it paints a sorry picture.
