West Ham fans have little reason to tune into Match of the Day nowadays and this weekend was no different after the 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest.
All in all it has been a thoroughly miserable year for West Ham United.
The Hammers signed off 2023 in the Premier League’s top six, just outside the Champions League spots.
Brilliant wins over Man United and away at Arsenal rounded off a memorable year which had seen West Ham lift a first trophy for 43 years.
The Hammers went from riding the crest of a wave to crashing into the rocks.
Since the turn of the year to 2024 West Ham have won just nine of their 38 games in all competitions.
That’s an entire Premier League season’s worth of matches. And West Ham are lucky their form is split over two different seasons because that is relegation form.
The fact three of those victories this season have been extremely fortunate is even more concerning.
David Moyes paid the price for his part in the malaise with West Ham cutting ties with the Scot.
Now his successor Julen Lopetegui is under serious pressure for his part in a year to forget.
Unprecedented Match of the Day analysis of West Ham loss
So you can see why Hammers fans have had little reason to tune in to the BBC’s flagship football show Match of the Day.
Last weekend after the fortunate win over Man United, the programme’s Sunday serving – MOTD2 – absolutely laid into the club’s first half performance.
Edson Alvarez was picked out as West Ham’s biggest problem. They were clearly on to something.
It was pointed out that Alvarez is slow, immobile and not up to Premier League standards for a central midfielder.
Those statements proved unerringly accurate again as Alvarez stunk out the City Ground before leaving West Ham in the lurch by getting needlessly sent off yet again.
The heat has turned up on Lopetegui once more off the back of the limp 3-0 defeat.
Many West Ham fans and plenty of press are calling for the Spaniard to be axed.
Lopetegui’s team selection, tactics and substitutions are being heavily criticised.
Talk is Everton at home this coming weekend could be last chance saloon for the ex Wolves boss.
All the ingredients for some in-depth discussion on what’s going wrong at West Ham then one might think.
Lineker and co ironically say everything about Hammers
But unprecedented Match of the Day analysis of the West Ham loss to Nottingham Forest says it all in a new low.
The more masochistic amongst West Ham’s fanbase tuned in to MOTD to hear what Gary Lineker, Micah Richards and former Hammer Joe Hart thought of the performance, issues and Lopetegui.
What happened next beggars belief.
Lineker, Hart and Richards ran the rule over some highlights for two minutes after interviews with both managers.
Hart dissected Forest’s excellent defensive unit while stats were shown about their season so far.
But West Ham did not receive a single mention at any stage in the 90-minute show.
Not even a brief one or two-word verdict on their shambolic display or Alvarez’s sending off.
Sorry state of affairs for West Ham
After every game, comment and analysis was offered on each team. Except West Ham.
It probably says more about just how awful the Hammers are right now than how bad MOTD has become.
What a sorry state of affairs.
This is the best league in the world and West Ham have enjoyed being one of the most talked about teams in recent seasons.
Now there is so little to say about the team we’re bordering on becoming irrelevant.
That being said, it’s poor from the BBC not to offer even a brief analysis.
The fact they offered not one word about the Hammers is the most damning indictment on the season so far.
