Bayern Munich have just announced that new signing Hiroki Ito, who joined the club from VfB Stuttgart this summer, has suffered a fresh setback in his recovery from a metatarsal injury in preseason. The Japanese defender had to undergo surgery for a second time, and faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
The official announcement gives no exact timeline for his return:
ℹ️ Bei Hiroki #Ito war ein erneuter operativer Eingriff am Mittelfuß nötig. Dieser erfolgte am heutigen Dienstag und ist gut verlaufen. Damit muss der Verteidiger jedoch vorerst wieder pausieren.
Wir wünschen eine schnelle Genesung! ❤️

Hiroki #Ito had to undergo another operation on his metatarsal. This was carried out today, Tuesday, and went well. However, the defender will have to take another break for the time being.
We wish you a speedy recovery!

This is just the latest in a long line of setbacks for Ito, who broke his foot in the very first game of preseason (versus FC Düren). Back then, fans feared that his metatarsal injury could be severe enough to keep him out for an extended period of time. Looks like those fears turned out to be true:
Now, all we can hope is that this will be the final time Ito will need to go under the knife, and the recovery goes smoothly from here on out. He will likely miss the entire Hinrunde, but Kompany will hope he gets the defender back for the second half of the season.
