According to a report from Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany spent a good portion of Monday’s closed practice working on the finer points of his team’s defense:
The focus on yesterday’s closed training session was on defending. There was special training for the defenders. Vincent Kompany’s assistant Aaron Danks repeatedly gave the defenders precise instructions, explaining where they should stand and how close they should position themselves to their opponents.
After that, they practiced with high intensity how the opponents would approach the defense and how the team should defend against quick counterattacks – which was the main problem in the last two defeats in the Champions League. Kompany and his assistants are focusing on improving the defense, especially since tomorrow’s opponents Benfica are also extremely dangerous going forward.
Kompany recognizes what many fans and pundits have seen — there are some issues on the backline. That said, the coach has put together a plan to work on improving those things in training. The next big step for him will be to show that he can make those changes in real-time during matches when things are not working.
Like players, coaches also have an evolutionary path and Kompany is working on ensuring his team is making much needed improvements.
