Tottenham put up a comeback performance for the ages as they came back from 1-0 down to beat Aston Villa 4-1 on the weekend.
Ange Postecoglou is often admired and criticised—often simultaneously—for his dogmatic approach to football. However, according to one club correspondent, that’s exactly what gives his men the edge in tricky situations.
Alasdair Gold praises Tottenham’s “we-never-stop” approach after Aston Villa win
Speaking recently on his official YouTube channel, Tottenham’s correspondent for Football London, Alasdair Gold, discussed among other things Ange Postecoglou’s approach that helped his side come back into the game.
“Whatever Postecoglou said at halftime, whatever little tactical tweaks he made, it worked again.
“Postecoglou has instilled a ‘we-never-stop’ approach which has made Tottenham a high-energy and high-pressing team.”
Up next for Spurs is a trip to Istanbul to face Galatasaray in the Europa League before they host Ipswich Town in the league on Sunday.
This goes both ways
Spurs’ never-give-up approach is of course admirable. It’s what gives them the belief to stay committed to coming back in any game. But it’s also what makes them vulnerable in games in which they’re ahead.
On any given day, Tottenham may win or lose, but they’re always entertaining, always giving their all, which is good for the fans but isn’t really conducive to long-term success in a such a way that would help Tottenham not only break into the Champions League places but also stay there under Postecoglou.
There will be enough hiccups for Tottenham along the way this season to leave them lacking come May.
