West Ham have a big decision to make on the future of Luis Guilherme, who appears to be surplus to requirements under current head coach Julen Lopetegui.
To say the club is concerned about the situation surrounding the Brazilian wonderkid would be an understatement, especially given the money spent on the Palmeiras starlet.
Nothing highlights the disconnect at West Ham more than the Director of Football spending £20 million on a player the manager has no intention of using. The situation is nothing new, as shown in recent seasons with the signings of Nikola Vlasic and Maxwel Cornet, neither of whom were given a sustained run in the team.
Now, questions are reportedly being raised in Guilherme’s home country, where he is considered one of Brazil’s brightest prospects.
The Hammers must consider loaning him out, selling him, or at least using him from the bench. Guilherme impressed in his start for the Irons’ U21 team, scoring a superb goal many believed would earn him more academy appearances—but that never materialised.
It seems West Ham may have wasted £20 million on a player without a clear plan for his development. Perhaps they’re waiting to see if a new manager replaces Lopetegui and decides to integrate the youngster. However, if things stay as they are, a loan move might be the best solution for all involved.
