West Ham United parted ways with David Moyes five months ago, after a woeful second-half of the season.
David Sullivan decided to bring Julen Lopetegui into the London Stadium to replace David Moyes as the new West Ham boss.
However, the Spaniard has failed to oversee any kind of progress at the London Stadium, and it has been claimed that the idea of him still being in charge come May is ‘fanciful’.
However, just because Lopetegui is struggling, it doesn’t mean that sacking Moyes was the wrong call.
The only wrong decision the West Ham owners made was appointing the Spaniard to replace the Scot!
Moyes recently suggested that the Hammers look a lot more open this season than we were under his stewardship – rich coming from a man whose team shipped 74 Premier League goals last season I thought!
I am grateful for what the 61-year-old did for us, but he reached his ceiling in charge of West Ham.
It seems to me like he’s still pretty bitter about his Hammers exit…
David Moyes – Why new West Ham contract was taken away
The majority of Hammers fans knew that Moyes’s time was up at the end of last season, in spite of the obvious success he brought to the club.
I truly believe that he knew it as well.
But when did it really turn sour between the Scot and the board?
Moyes was a guest on the Stick to Football Podcast, and discussed a wide range of topics covering all his time at West Ham.
He opened up on the contract offer he received at the end of December, and explained why he never signed it.
“We beat Arsenal on December 28, at The Emirates, and that day the club had offered me a new contract,“ Moyes said.
“We then went on a three-game losing streak, and I hadn’t signed the contract as I wasn’t sure if I should stay.“
“The contract wasn’t a great contract, but David Sullivan withdrew the contract just off the back of those results. We then said we’d wait and make a decision at the end of the season.“
Well, that three-game losing streak Moyes is talking about didn’t come until February, when we lost 3-0 to Manchester United, 6-0 at home to Arsenal and 2-0 away at Nottingham Forest.
What the Scot conveniently forgot to mention was the abysmal run directly after our 2-0 win against Arsenal in December.
We played five games before the defeat to Manchester United up at Old Trafford.
Dishonest from Moyes?
Two of those five matches were against Bristol City in the FA Cup, where we drew 1-1 at the London Stadium and lost 1-0 in the replay at Ashton Gate.
One was away at Sheffield United, who were rock bottom at the time, and we put in a truly awful performance – one that culminated in a 2-2 draw.
Then there were two home Premier League games against Brighton and Bournemouth respectively. They both ended in bore draws.
It really was an awful run of form for the Hammers, and our hopes of finishing inside the top six died with it.
So for David Moyes to suggest that the contract offer was yanked away from him because of West Ham’s results against Manchester United, Arsenal and Nottingham Forest is simply disingenuous.
The Hammers experienced a slow demise from New Year’s Day onwards, and in the end there was no coming back for Moyes.
At the very best, the Scot’s comments were a result of poor memory but at the worst, they were dishonest.
