Tottenham Hotspur wide forward Heung Min Son has been on receiving end of multiple injury problems in the ongoing campaign that has limited his involvement for the North Londoners.
The South Korean skipper is a key cog in Ange Postecoglou’s side and his absence in the pitch was surly felt with the Lilywhites losing the previous two League games that the 32-year-old missed. However, Spurs welcomed Son back in their fixture against Aston Villa at the weekend.
Son was frustrated at substitution
While Tottenham got better of Unai Emery’s side in a thumping 4-1 win, many supporters were surprised in the midst of it when Ange Postecoglou decided to sub off the former Bayer Leverkusen star when the team was still tied at 1-1. It weren’t only the supporters; the player himself was surprised when his number was waved off on the sidelines in red.
And Simon Jordan had branded the Spurs skipper as ‘unhelpful’ for his actions in the weekend’s game when he was subbed off in the 57th minute as Richarlison came on.
While everyone was questioning the decision to take out possibly Tottenham’s most important decision player, Ange Postecoglou’s bold decision paid off as his side went on to score thrice to gain a comfortable set of three points against the Villans.
Writing about Son’s actions on page 75 of Thursday’s Daily Mail (via. Tottenham News), Jordan wrote:
“We usually see Ange Postecoglou looking down at the floor during television interviews but on his behalf I felt like shouting ‘up yours!’ to those who questioned his decision to hook captain, Son Heung-min, during Sunday’s 4-1 win against Aston Villa.
“One pundit asked, ‘what is he thinking?’ when the change was made at 1-1 and they’d have been all over the Spurs manager like a cheap suit if it hadn’t worked out.
“Turns out Ange’s thinking was to go out and smash Villa and he was proven more than right after a brave decision, even if Son’s reaction to being withdrawn wasn’t helpful.”

Eyeing season long fitness
Heung Min Son is a pivotal figure in Spurs roster and the managed minutes are to ensure that the injury concerns don’t multiply and he remains fit for the rest of the season. While his reaction to the substitution may have been because of his competitive nature and his want to make an impact when the game was still tied, we need to trust Ange and club doctor’s over his minutes management till he gets to full fitness.
