It says everything about the pressure mounting at West Ham and Newcastle that Jose Mourinho has been linked with both clubs.
Mourinho was one of seven managers linked as potential replacements for Julen Lopetegui at West Ham last week.
There was also intense speculation the self-styled ‘Special One’ was very much open to joining mega rich Newcastle amid an indifferent start to the season from Eddie Howe’s side.
West Ham were just four points off the Magpies in the Premier League table at the start of the weekend.
The home game against Everton was reported to be a “must win” for Lopetegui.
Indeed it was even claimed the Hammers had to ‘win convincingly’ to keep the Spaniard in a job for when they go to Newcastle United next.
West Ham played out a 0-0 draw, a game described as the worst anywhere in the Premier League this season.
Meanwhile Newcastle widened the gap between them and West Ham to six points with a 3-1 win at Forest.
West Ham fans all saying the same thing about Newcastle
Now the Premier League goes into its last break until March.
When it resumes West Ham make the long trip north to Newcastle for the Monday Night Football.
The Hammers have a dismal record against Newcastle in the last few years.
West Ham have won just once in the last 11 meetings with the Geordies, stretching all the way back to 2019.
While Howe eased the pressure on his own shoulders with the win at Forest, calls for Lopetegui to be sacked have grown ever louder.
Many fans have pointed to the fact West Ham have Newcastle and Arsenal next.
In the opinion of some supporters, refusal to sack the Spaniard now is simply delaying the inevitable.
Now West Ham fans are all saying the same thing about the Newcastle clash after what they saw.
Things about to get ‘nasty’ for Hammers fear fans
Some Hammers fans who had just woken up from the slumber induced by that draw with Everton, had the chance to see what they face next as Newcastle played Forest on TV on Sunday.
Things looked encouraging too.
Like the Hammers last week, Newcastle fell behind at the City Ground.
The difference is, they roared back to record their biggest win of the season so far 3-1.
It could and should have been more.
One look at social media and fan forums suggest Hammers supporters know it will be when they go to St James’s Park after the break.
West Ham fans are already quaking in their boots about their next Premier League clash.
The Irons have conceded 11 goals in their last three against Howe’s Newcastle.
And many feel a heavy defeat is now entirely inevitable.
Here are a selection of comments from West Ham fans on social media about their trip to St James’s Park.
‘Wilson to score; minimum four goals conceded’
The common themes are West Ham fans are very scared, think things could seriously nasty and believe bogeyman Callum Wilson will undoubtedly make his comeback and score his first goal of the season against them.
“Newcastle away next… I’m very, very scared,” West Ham Place said on X.
“They don’t have Dan Burn so maybe we wont concede from a header!” said one Hammers fan.
“Arsenal at home after that as well, the next few weeks are gonna be nasty,” said another.
“Obviously Wilson to get his yearly goal against West Ham,” says Gary Halman.
“Minimum four goals conceded,” Matt Dawe states.
John Moore says: “Whether JLo is replaced or not, I don’t think he should go just yet. With Newcastle and Arsenal next two games and whoever is in charge likely to lose both. Then wait until after Arsenal and review at that point. Why give a potential new manager two really tough games to start.”
Ibby adds: “We’ve got Newcastle hitting form under the lights at St James’ Park next game. Going to be a long long long night.”
“Next two games.. Newcastle and Arsenal and given our current form nailed on losses. So infuriating watching us at mo. One dimensional, lacklustre, zero application – need I go on…?” says Ronan Fagan.
“We have Newcastle and Arsenal the next two games. We all know we ain’t winning those so I don’t get why we have to wait for us to lose to sack him when now its the best time,” says another Hammers fan.
