It takes one of the newest, youngest recruits to West Ham United to show up some of his senior, more illustrious ‘superstar’ peers. Yesterdays game saw a brilliant piece of defensive cover by Crysencio Summerville which put his midfield colleagues to shame.
Lucas Paqueta strolled around, ineffective, losing the ball some 19 times and won just three of his 14 duels. He would do well to watch the clip below and reflect on his commitment to West Ham’s cause right now. Preoccupied by his pending FA enquiry, he is clearly not any where near his first season’s commitment.
In a slow, cumbersome midfield it is noticeable that there is not a midfielder in sight in the chase back to cover the Everton break in the video which whufc.com published to showcase Summerville’s commitment: Which it does.
But I watched the clip several times and there’s no defensive midfield cover from Paquetá, Soucek or Rodriguez: It takes attacking winger, Summerville to sprint the whole length of the pitch and carry out a committed, body on the line block.

Previous articles I’ve written have lamented out slow, cardboard cutout midfielders who don’t tackle: They aren’t even in the frame of this clip. Summerville’s commitment and athleticism only goes to contrast with, and highlight even more the porous Hammers midfield.
