The blame game has ignited at West Ham as pressure mounts on the club to act over Julen Lopetegui and it’s prompted an unmissable rant.
Julen Lopetegui is clinging to his job as West Ham boss by his fingernails.
The dismal draw with Everton has many fans calling for the Spaniard to be sacked.
West Ham’s owners made it clear it was nowhere near good enough.
But despite today marking the start of the last pause in the season until March, Lopetegui remains in charge of the Hammers.
The under pressure 57-year-old has been criticised by fans and the press for his failure to get any kind of tune out of West Ham’s expensively assembled side.
West Ham’s manager then appeared to flip the blame on technical director Tim Steidten at the weekend.
Lopetegui said he is not able to implement the style he wants because of the players he has been given.
That has raised serious question marks over West Ham’s summer business and a lack of cohesion and a coherent plan and strategy with recruitment.
That’s been clear for all to see on the pitch where the Hammers have a hodge podge of players who don’t complement each other or function as a unit, particularly in midfield.
Lopetegui’s brief after a £155m spend on nine players was to challenge for Europe.
His two-year contract is geared entirely around it as a third year will be triggered if the Hammers qualify for any UEFA competition.
Blame game ignites as pressure mounts at West Ham
Lopetegui’s apparent criticism of Steidten’s recruitment comes amid reports David Sullivan and the German will meet this week to discuss the manager’s future.
It also comes after eight different managers were linked as potential replacements at the London Stadium.
West Ham’s struggles have seen fans, pundits and the press queueing up to say those immortal words ‘be careful what you wish for’.
The phrase has been repeated ad nauseum about the Hammers since they decided to part ways with David Moyes.
The Scot reaffirmed that West Ham withdrew a contract offer at the turn of the year when he said he wasn’t happy with the terms.
Hammers News revealed at the time those terms were ceding transfer control to Steidten and Moyes’ son David being replaced in the scouting department by the German’s brother Moritz and Max Hahn – who he worked with at Werder Bremen.
Moyes’ appearance on The Overlap and a clear dig at West Ham’s technical director structure has made big headlines since.
The situation has seen dark clouds gather over the London Stadium again.
Everyone seems to have different opinions over who is at fault.
So an angry West Ham talkSPORT rant is a must listen as the blame game ignites.
‘Fish stinks from the head’ – Angry West Ham rant is a must listen
Jason Cundy and Jamie O’Hara were discussing the West Ham situation on talkSPORT.
They took a call from a Hammers fan who has followed the club for 56 years.
He went on a passionate missive about the club laying the blame squarely at the feet of majority owner Sullivan – saying ‘the fish stinks from the head’.
O’Hara and Cundy rather childishly and harshly appear to be holding back laughter as the fan poured his heart out.
Sullivan was criticised for his treatment of Moyes and the supporter believes the problems are of his making.
Here’s what he had to say or you can listen to the full rant in the post below.
“I’ve been a West Ham fan for 56 years, I don’t expect my club to be challenging for the league,” he said.
“I expect them to be playing attractive football, in and around that European spot.
“In 56 years I’ve seen ups and downs, I’ve seen promotions, I’ve seen great players come and go, the Brookings, Devonshires, Di Canios, I’ve seen them all.
“In the summer when Sullivan was delaying naming the (manager) appointment, I refused to renew my season ticket and I’ll tell you why.
“I’m a claret and blue absolutely through and through. My heart is claret and blue, the blood that runs through my veins is claret and blue.
“But this club has destroyed my soul and David Sullivan is the man who has destroyed the soul of this club.
“He is the real problem. I can tell you now David Moyes, the way he was treated, absolutely and utterly disgraceful. I was ashamed of my club. The guy saved us from two relegations, got us to a European final, got us to a European semi-final, the way that we treated that man – absolutely disgraceful.
“I’ve met the man personally and I know him very well. Honestly the way my club behaves I’m ashamed sometimes to be associated with it.
“The rot starts from the top in our club, the fish stinks from the head. And that’s where our problems always lie. I refuse to go back into the club, I will not pay them anymore season ticket money and that is a big statement from someone like me for anyone who knows me.
“I’ve followed the club home and away for over 36 years but I can’t do it anymore…
“We’re a club that’s lost, we have no identity at all in our play, what are we trying to achieve?
“Does anybody know?”
