West Ham United drew 0-0 with Everton on Saturday, and Julen Lopetegui was to blame for a multitude of reasons.
However, one was more galling than the rest.
Julen Lopetegui is facing intense scrutiny from the West Ham fans right now, and rightly so.
The Hammers owners have clearly been far from impressed by the Spaniard’s efforts either, and recent claims have suggested that the board have made it very clear to the gaffer that results MUST improve quickly.
There is so much doom and gloom around the London Stadium at the moment, and that’s just not right given the amount of top quality signings we made in the summer.
Lopetegui has somehow managed to oversee regression rather than progression at West Ham.
The most painful thing for the Hammers fans is that the 58-year-old seems to be completely powerless to turn things around.
Something he instructed one of his players to do against Everton on Saturday highlighted his incompetence at this level.
Julen Lopetegui’s tactic with West Ham man proves he deserves sack
There were numerous poor decisions made on the day by Lopetegui.
However, one stood out to me as worse than all the rest, and it was proof that he has truly lost the plot.
Bizarrely, Lopetegui had Tomas Soucek dropping deep, splitting the two centre-backs and initiating all of our attacks from deep.
In Layman’s terms, and without trying to sound patronising, that means we had our least technically gifted midfielder performing the role of a ball-playing centre-back against the Toffees.
It was a disastrous move, and to add insult to injury, it meant that we didn’t have our most dangerous goalscoring midfielder anywhere near the opposition’s penalty box.
How many times has Soucek arrived on cue to score important goals for us.
Many hammers fans believe that Julen Lopetegui doesn’t actually know what he’s doing.
The first sign of a manager feeling the pressure is when he starts to make blindingly obvious errors.
Moving Soucek into the deep-lying midfield role on Saturday was a proper example of exactly that.
What was he thinking? Nobody knows that apart from the Spaniard himself.
What I do know is that Julen Lopetegui’s usage of Soucek against Everton proves to me that he should be sacked and moved on from West Ham as soon as possible.
