Harry Redknapp has shown himself up somewhat with his latest take on West Ham United’s recruitment.
Don’t get me wrong, West Ham made some questionable signings in the summer, but we made some fantastic ones as well.
Julen Lopetegui just hasn’t been able to find a system whereby some of the new-boys have been able to gel together.
Harry Redknapp has shared why he thinks there are so many problems at the London Stadium right now.
The former Hammers boss was one of the many pundits to infuriatingly tell the West Ham fans to ‘be careful what you wish for’ just before David Moyes was moved on.
He’s never been one for hot takes when it comes to the Hammers – he’s usually a few months behind.
However, this time he completely contradicted himself, and performed a full on 180 degree turn.
Fickle Harry Redknapp blames one man for West Ham’s problems
Things certainly haven’t gone smoothly at the London Stadium this season.
It could actually be argued that we’ve somehow gone backwards, even after the disastrous final few months of David Moyes’s spell in charge.
And Redknapp made it very clear where the blame should lie, when speaking on talkSPORT (November 11th, 8:54am)
“The recruitment and the good players, obviously, at the moment are not performing – it’s very difficult and the manager cops the blame.
“I don’t know the people who make the recruitment. Who brings the players in if they’re not good enough?“
“It wouldn’t be him (Lopetegui), he’s only a small cog in that wheel, and the manager takes the blame at the end but you want to look at who recruited some of these players?“
“Obviously, one or two of them are not good enough – they’ve not recruited well, West Ham. That’s their big problem.”
So it’s clear that the 77-year-old is blaming Tim Steidten for the Hammers’ player recruitment in the summer.
But the thing is, he said the complete opposite back in August.
It was only three months ago when Redknapp was telling talkSPORT (August 7th, 9:13am) how impressed he was with our summer business:
“They’ve made some good signings.
“I like the look of West Ham. They’ve got a couple of good wingers in, including [Crysencio] Summerville from Leeds; [Jarrod] Bowen is there too.“
“This could be a good year for them. I’ve got a feeling they’re going to do very well, hopefully.”
That’s quite the U-turn from Harry isn’t it!
He either forgot what he said in the summer or thinks that the new signings West Ham made just a few months ago have become bad players overnight.
I personally don’t think Harry Redknapp is very clued up on elite level football anymore anyway, so West Ham fans should take what he says with a pinch of salt.
The Hammers made some very good signings in the summer, but Lopetegui is failing miserably to get the best out of them.
Sure, a powerful and athletic ball-carrying central midfielder should have been signed, but hopefully that will be addressed in January.
Aside from that particular oversight, West Ham have a very good squad of players, and we should be doing miles better than we are.
