Guido Rodriguez linked up with West Ham United on a free transfer back in the summer.
The West Ham fans were hugely excited that we won the race to bring Guido Rodriguez to the London Stadium, after his fine performances for Real Betis over the past few years.
West Ham head coach Julen Lopetegui is clearly a big fan of the midfielder, and has full trust in the South American.
He was one of the few summer signings made by Lopetegui rather than Tim Steidten, perhaps the only one.
Perhaps it’s no surprise then that Rodriguez has started every single Premier League game so far this season.
However, the 30-year-old has been a big weak link for the Hammers as far as I’m concerned.
I believe it’s clear to see that he is in no way suited to the intense nature of Premier League football.
That said, the good news is that West Ham will still be able to make an instant profit on him.
West Ham could make an instant profit on Guido Rodriguez
Rodriguez is obviously a decent footballer, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player so ill-suited to the Premier League as the Argentinian is.
The thing is, there will be plenty of clubs in Spain, Italy and France who would take him in a heartbeat, for a decent fee as well may I add.
The Argentinian midfielder would be perfectly suited to those leagues, due to their more pedestrian nature.
Barcelona tired to sign him in the summer after all (TEAMtalk).
Unfortunately for him, he has struggled with the pace of Premier League football badly so far.
I get that it’s still very early days, and that players need time to settle into their new surroundings, but sometimes you can just tell that certain players haven’t got what it takes.
And that much is true for Guido Rodriguez in the Premier League.
He’s been miles off the pace so far this season, aside from one good half of football away at Tottenham in October.
I’m actually astounded that Lopetegui has continued to start him – perhaps that’s mainly becuase of Edson Alvarez’s injury issues and disciplinary problems.
Either way, it’s time for the Hammers owners to cut their losses and make a big upgrade in January.
More energy and legs needed in West Ham’s midfield
The fact that we don’t have a player like Youssouf Fofana or Amadou Onana in this day and age is simply unacceptable.
Failing to sign a powerful, ball-carrying central midfielder was a huge oversight from Steidten and Lopetegui.
I feel like we’ve been left behind in the modern game as a result.
If we’re being honest with ourselves, the Hammers haven’t been the same team since Declan Rice left us to join Arsenal in the summer of 2023.
West Ham miss the powerful 25-year-old badly.
Now we have a midfield comprised of ageing, slow and lethargic players who are all so incredibly easy to bypass for the opposition.
We are getting run through by our opponents with ease, and we lack any kind if explosiveness in transition.
Selling Guido Rodriguez in January and bringing in a central midfield powerhouse should be priority number one for West Ham.
