Vladimir Coufal is clearly not happy with life at West Ham United under Julen Lopetegui right now.
West Ham right-back Vladimir Coufal has lost his place in the side to Aaron Wan-Bissaka this season, after Julen Lopetegui brought the 26-year-old to the London Stadium.
It was recently suggested that Coufal could leave West Ham on a free transfer, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.
That wouldn’t surprise me one little bit, given the 32-year-old’s painful regression over the past year or so.
He is nowhere near the levels required now to perform the right-back role in the best league in the world.
Coufal thinks he’s deserving of more game-time though…
West Ham man Vladimir Coufal says Lopetegui has broken promise
The former Slavia Prague defender has played second fiddle to Wan-Bissaka this season.
He has played just 223 minutes of Premier League football, and his future at the club seems to be bleak.
However, Coufal thought he’d be playing more this term.
When speaking to Czech media outlet Sport, the Hammers right-back opened up on how he was promised more football by Lopetegui.
“When I talked to the coach (Julen Lopetegui), he told me that he was extremely happy with me. That he is convinced that I will get more minutes, more chances and start playing, that I am a great professional. I can’t say a bad word against the coach, or he has against me, it’s just that we don’t have a good time on the pitch yet. If it should continue like this, we have to sit down and see what to do next. I definitely don’t want to sit on the bench, I still feel like I can play in the Premier League,”
In fairness to Coufal, he has made it very clear that he respects Lopetegui.
However, the Hammers boss clearly told the 32-year-old that he would be getting more minutes this season than he has done so far.
Should he be playing more regularly though?
West Ham right-back Vladimir Coufal said that he believes he can still play in the Premier League, but I’m not so sure.
The Czech Republic international is nowhere near the levels of Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
I think it would be in everyone’s best interest for Coufal to leave West Ham in the January transfer window.
The Lopetegui can then bring in a young and pacy right-back to really challenge Wan-Bissaka for his place.
