West Ham United may well have the chance to finally make what would be the dream managerial appointment.
Xabi Alonso is someone who has been linked with West Ham before, when he was mooted as a potential replacement for David Moyes.
The Hammers ended up bringing Julen Lopetegui to the London Stadium instead – a decision that now looks like a huge mistake.
The 58-year-old has proven to be well out of his depth so far.
The football he has deployed has been truly atrocious, and the main concern is that he’s clueless as to how to improve things.
He was the wrong appointment in the first place – so many West Ham fans suggested that at the time.
It is surely time to make a chance. That said though, the Hammers might just be better off waiting until next summer…
Xabi Alonso leaving could open door for dream West Ham appointment
According to a report from Eurosport, Xabi Alonso will leave Bayer Leverkusen of his own accord in the summer of 2025 – a year before his contract ends.
Now the bad news is that Real Madrid are leading the chase for his signature, while Bayern Munich could try for him again as well.
Those two clubs obviously have more pulling power than us, but hear me out.
Firstly, there is no guarantee that Carlo Ancelotti and Vincent Kompany won’t win big trophies with Madrid and Bayern respectively this season.
If the Italian and the Belgian bring success to the two giants of European football, it would be incredibly bold to move them both on.
So the mega jobs might not actually be available for Alonso anyway.
The other reason why I think we could have a big chance is the pull of the Premier League.
Alonso loved his time in England with Liverpool, so could he be tempted by a couple of years in London? I think so.
Despite the Spaniard’s brilliant achievements with Bayer Leverkusen so far, he’s still relatively unproven.
Alonso may well have to prove himself further still, before he secures that truly elite job.
If David Sullivan shows some genuine ambition and offers Xabi Alonso a contract at West Ham, with the promise of huge financial backing, I believe he could be tempted into moving to the London Stadium.
However, the caveat to that is that if Madrid or Bayern offer him a role, he will obviously go to either of those clubs instead.
That’s the point in a dream though, you’re supposed to aim for the ‘impossible’.
One thing’s for sure, Xabi Alonso leaving Bayer Leverkusen on his own accord will at least give West Ham a fighting chance of appointing him.
