Tottenham left-back Destiny Udogie has had a poor season by his standards
Tottenham Hotspur entered November’s international break on a low, losing 2-1 to newly promoted Ipswich Town at home. It was Ipswich Town’s first win of the Premier League season upon their return to the top flight in the summer, one that left the Lilywhites 10th in the table.
Spurs’ recent form has been patchy, to say the least. They have lost three of their last six Premier League. One of the Tottenham players who has been struggling with form since the start of the 2024/25 season is Destiny Udogie.
Destiny Udogie was one of the best performers in Ange Postecoglou’s first season in charge of the north London club. He has mostly shown himself to be a reliable full-back since his arrival at Tottenham from Udinese.
An injury-hit debut campaign limited the Italy international to 30 appearances across all competitions, registering two goals and three assists. Udogie recovered from his hamstring injury over the summer and started the new campaign as the first-choice left-back for Spurs, but he hasn’t been anywhere near his best.
The youngster from Verona has struggled with consistency and made mistakes at the back. One of those costly errors led to Tottenham blowing away a 2-0 lead and losing 3-2 to Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium at the start of October. Yet, Ange Postecoglou has persisted with Udogie at left-back and he has started all of the north Londoners’ 11 Premier League games thus far.
John Wenham—the owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose—has backed Udogie to rediscover his lost mojo. He hopes the 21-year-old featuring for Italy over the international break will provide him with self-belief and confidence to get back to his best for Tottenham.
“I think the defensive form across the board has been a concern,” John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.
“However, it hasn’t all just been on Udogie. The last few games have been really poor overall from Spurs’ point of view.
“Hopefully, Udogie going away with Italy can help him rediscover his best form and give him a much-needed confidence booster Furthermore, he can look to add to the caps which he has already achieved.”
Udogie essayed the role of an inverted full-back in Big Ange’s system expertly last season, taking advanced positions in midfield and attack and influencing Spurs’ play. While he has tried doing the same, the left-footed defender hasn’t been effective and often struggled with his decision-making in the final third of the pitch.
The Italian is struggling to make an impact at the moment, with just one assist to his name in 11 league appearances. Perhaps, part of Udogie’s underwhelming season is the lack of competition at left-back. Ben Davies is there in the squad but he has largely been used as a back-up central defender.
So, Daniel Levy must target a quality left-back in January to cover and compete with Udogie. Not only will a new player provide him with sufficient rest but also push him to get back to the levels Spurs fans witnessed last term.

The defender is currently away on international duty and he will want to get as many minutes as possible in his tank for Italy and return to N17 with some confidence.
