Bruno Fernandes will miss Manchester United’s Monday night game against Newcastle next week after picking up his third red card of the season (although the first was rightly overturned after VAR incorrectly determined he deserved to be sent off against Tottenham Hotspur.
With the scoreline at 0-0 against Wolves on Boxing Day, Fernandes accelerated United towards defeat with a second year just moments after the restart.
After the game in his interview with Prime Video, Amorim discussed how difficult the red card made the match for his team.
It was really hard with the sending off. The goal was similar against Tottenham. Then, we tried. Even with one less guy we tried to and I think we were near something but then Wolves scored the second one. Then, in the end, we tried everything and the transition was 2-0.
I think he (Fernandes) cannot go to the ball. He’s trying to reach the ball and some guys are not even looking at the ball but I don’t want to focus on that. I think the good thing is we were near the goal, even with 10 men. That is a good thing, but we lost.
It’s so tough to win games in this league with 11 men. With 10 men, it’s more difficult. We have to focus on that.
Amorim was asked whether Harry Maguire would be reinstated as captain for the Newcastle game but the manager wasn’t prepared to reveal his selection.
You will have to wait until the game and see the captain. What do I think of Harry? He works really well – he is focused on the job and not what people say. He has no excuses, even if he had some tough moments. I think in that department he is an example. He is there to play, to help the team and he’s trying to do that.
