Some transfer stories are a bit ‘meh‘ in the words of my daughter. Some are depressing in their lack of ambition but occasionally, like the Jean-Clair Todibo rumour last Summer, one comes a long that grabs the imagination and then the scouring for other corroboration of the foundation of a story really starts in earnest.
The good thing now is that there’s only a week ’til the window opens so we’ll soon see if this one is going anywhere.
This report certainly belongs in the ‘latter’ category – the player in question would be a superb signing.
West Ham have apparently (according to givemesport.com) already ‘made a bid’ for Real Sociedad’s £50 million midfielder/attacker Brais Mendez. If this one has developed from a ‘wishful’ to a ‘firm’ offer then it could be very good news.
Remember, also, that Nayef Aguerd is on loan at the same club, so before you disregard this one on price, remember Aguerd represents over half that value meaning The Hammers would be looking to find £25 million to make this deal happen. We already know that both real Sociedad and Aguerd would like the Moroccan to stay.
Mendez himself has a £50 million release clause.
The report sets out: “The Hammers, alongside Aston Villa, are reportedly in the picture to sign the Spaniard in 2025, having taken notice of his impressive performances for La Real this season.
Mendez, who mainly operates as an attacking midfielder, has scored three goals and provided three assists in 22 appearances in all competitions this season.”
Mendez, who mainly operates as an attacking midfielder, has scored three goals and provided three assists in 22 appearances in all competitions this season. I’ll watch this one with interest. He’d certainly be a huge upgrade for West Ham’s slow sluggish midfield.
