According to a report from The Athletic’s Mario Cortegana (as captured by Madrid Universal), Real Madrid agreed to terms with Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies last February for a move to the club that would go down in either the summer of 2024 or 2025.
Given Davies’ status as a free agent entering this summer, it would be safe to assume that the contract proposal for this summer is far more advantageous for the Canadian:
It’s never over until it is in football, and Real Madrid’s pursuit of Alphonso Davies is the perfect example of the same. Los Blancos had locked in on the Canadian international as their next left-back signing for the summer and everything appeared set to steal him on a free transfer given that his contract runs out in June.
In recent weeks, however, news of a possible renewal of the player with Bayern Munich has come to the fore and it is suddenly not so clear if he will join the Spanish side or not. As brought to light by Mario Cortegana in a recent update, Real Madrid had reached an agreement with Davies’ camp back in February over the terms the Canadian star would sign with Real Madrid. At the time, it was not only the terms for the 2024 summer transfer window but also the 2025 transfer window that was discussed.
The Spanish journalist thus conveys that Los Blancos can still make a move for Davies and that the saga is far from over despite Bayern Munich’s progress towards a renewal. All doors continue to be open.
Recent developments, however, seem to indicate that Davies is strongly considering a contract extension with Bayern Munich. It could be a very interesting time period for both Bayern Munich and Real Madrid as Davies’ decision will have a trickle-down effect on roster planning at whichever club the Canadian star opts to sign with.
All the while, Liverpool FC, FC Barcelona, and Manchester United are all in background with interest in Davies as well.
