Wolves manager Vitor Pereira has insisted he doesn’t want to lose Matheus Cunha following transfer links with Arsenal in the media this week.
Wolves star Matheus Cunha has been linked with Arsenal by various outlets this week, and manager Vitor Pereira was asked about the links after his goal and assist against Manchester United on Boxing Day.
“I hope he stays with us for a long time, but I understand that as a special player – he will have opportunities for sure in his career,” Pereira said.
“It is not only about his technique, but his personality. He is special because he can take the ball in a moment of pressure and make magic from nothing.
“Of course, I do not want him to be sold in January.”
Mike McGrath of The Telegraph and James McNicholas of The Athletic have both suggested in the last few days that Arsenal currently hold an interest in Cunha.
McGrath claimed Arsenal’s pursuit of Cunha pre-dates the recent injuries to Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling, with the Gunners watching him over the last three seasons.
But both sources agree that with Wolves fighting relegation, they are extremely reluctant to let such a key player leave in the winter window.
In fact, Wolves want the 25-year-old to extend his deal past its current expiry in 2027.
Cunha’s goal and assist against Manchester United on Thursday put him on 14 goal contributions for the season, in just 18 Premier League games. He’s in his best form since moving to England, so it’s no surprise he’s starting to draw the attentions of the country’s top clubs.
