Arsenal are interested in Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi, but they may be priced out of a move in the January transfer window.
Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport report that Arsenal are among the clubs most interested in Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi, having scouted him closely in recent months.
Mikel Arteta obviously got a close look at Carnesecchi in September, as the goalkeeper made a couple of great saves in the 0-0 draw between their two teams.
The Gunners are on “excellent terms” with Carnesecchi’s agent due to the Riccardo Calafiori deal, so they have an edge there too.
But there are a couple of complications to a potential transfer, not least that Paris Saint-Germain are planning a summer move for the goalkeeper.
On top of that, CdS claim that it would be difficult to imagine Atalanta parting ways with Carnesecchi for less than €40-50m (£33.2-41.5m) in the winter window, making a January move unlikely.
Though they clearly have other priorities, it wouldn’t be a complete shock to see Arsenal pursuing a deal for a goalkeeper in the January transfer window.
We know that the Gunners were hoping to sign Joan Garcia in the summer, and they pursued other players as potential third-choice goalkeeper signings as well.
James McNicholas reported for The Athletic this week that there’s loan interest in current third choice Tommy Setford, but Arsenal would only consider letting him leave if they signed someone first. So the incentive to make such a signing is there.
Arsenal also have some flexibility in which goalkeeper they sign. If a top goalkeeper is available, the Gunners likely wouldn’t have too many qualms about making Neto third choice, given the goalkeeper is only on loan anyway.
Alternatively, if an experienced goalkeeper was available for a low price, they could play the third-choice role themselves until Arsenal had the chance to sign a new player to compete with David Raya in the summer.
It just doesn’t feel as though Carnesecchi is the right opportunity for the January window, given the high cost and Arsenal’s other squad worries.
