Though Bayern Munich is first and foremost focused on winning titles, winning them with style is virtually as crucial as the titles themselves. Many Bayern coaches have learned the the hard way that less-than-convincing title victories merely earn one a stay of (figurative) execution rather than any real support. Fortunately, it seems that current head coach Vincent Kompany has the style points the Bayern board desires: “Historically, we have always played with this DNA since Louis van Gaal,” current member of the supervisory board, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, explains, via @iMiaSanMia. “Offensive, attractive, dominant, successful football. High pressing. Vincent does exactly the same thing; he has the best teacher, [Josep] Guardiola, and he has taken on a lot of DNA from him.”
However, while Rummenigge finds the re-introduction of fun football important, it will mean little without silverware at the end of the season: “The spectators also enjoy the performances that the teams put on in a qualitative and quantitative way and that’s ideally the way to go. Whether it ultimately leads to us winning titles again after coming away empty-handed last year remains to be seen,” he warns, via @iMiaSanMia.
Kompany’s start in Bavaria has been positive. But he will need to make sure that fun football will lead to positive results in the Bundesliga and the Champions League to keep the support he currently has.
