Julen Lopetegui cut a forlorn figure on the sidelines during West Ham United’s 4-1 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday.
Whilst West Ham didn’t actually play that badly in spells, we defended terribly as per usual, and Julen Lopetegui was unable to change things.
Lopetegui made it very clear to David Sullivan on Friday that West Ham need to sign a striker in the January window.
However, will he be given the chance to do that? Before the Man City game it was claimed that Lopetegui could be sacked if his side lost heavily at The Etihad.
He hasn’t been moved on yet, but a defeat to Aston Villa in the FA Cup next week would surely be the final straw.
The performances have been horrendous on the whole this season, and the results just as bad.
Before the Man City game we had already lost eight games this season by three goals or more – that number obviously now stands at nine.
So what’s the current state of play – will he stay or will he go?
Truly staggering Julen Lopetegui sack update after Man City
Things have got worse and worse for Lopetegui over the past few months.
The transfer business that he conducted alongside Tim Steidten in the summer now looks plain awful.
Lopetegui still doesn’t know his best team, and his constant tinkering with his starting lineup isn’t helping matters.
The 58-year-old is six months into the job now and he still hasn’t managed to implement a discernible and clear playing style at the club.
It’s just not good enough, and action needs to be taken now.
However, it seems like that won’t happen.
The West Ham board apparently want to give Lopetegui more time according to Athletic journalist Roshane Thomas.
How depressing is that to read.
It’s clear to see in my mind that West Ham are heading absolutely nowhere under Julen Lopetegui, and the board have to sack him if we are to make some genuine progress as a club.
We’ve regressed as a team since Lopetegui took over, and that’s quite the statement considering just how poor we were during the second half of last season.
The fact that the Hammers board are willing to give him more time is simply nonsensical in my mind, and I cannot comprehend the stance the owners have seemingly taken.
