Portuguese club SC Braga are eyeing a move for Tottenham misfit Sergio Reguilon
Tottenham Hotspur’s underwhelming season continued last weekend when they lost 2-1 at home to Newcastle United in the Premier League.
One cannot deny that injuries to several players have been one of the mitigating factors behind the North London outfit’s hugely inconsistent displays. Ange Postecoglou has been dealing with an unprecedented injury crisis at White Hart Lane, with his defensive unit being hit the hardest.
Defenders Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Ben Davies have all been on the sidelines for some time now, while Destiny Udogie suffered a recent hamstring injury in the 2-2 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers. Injuries to Udogie and Davies has forced Ange Postecoglou to recall Sergio Reguilon, who has been frozen out of the squad since the start of the season.

The Spaniard has been linked heavily with an exit—either now or on a free transfer at the end of the season. It is clear by now that he has no future at White Hart Lane under Postecoglou. The left-back has linked with several clubs across Europe over weeks and months. The 28-year-old has been linked with a return to Spain while former Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho continues to eye a reunion with him at Fenerbahce.
Now, it looks like another European club has entered the fray for the signing of the Tottenham outcast. According to reputed journalist Ben Jacobs, SC Braga are eyeing a move for Sergio Reguilon in this transfer window. Despite possessing a couple of left-back options, the Portuguese club want an experienced head in their squad and have set their sights on the Tottenham man.
“Braga is another one to watch at the moment. They’ve got Adrian Marin, Yuri Ribeiro, and a youngster called Francisco Chissumba who has a big future ahead of him. I think he’s only 19 off the top of my head, but they would like a more experienced left-sided player and Reguilon could be the answer for them,” Ben Jacobs said on Last Word on Spurs podcast.
“So, let’s sort of see if he gets a European option as opposed to your MLS and your Saudis where I’m told at the moment the player is not really thinking too much about that type of move.”
Reguilon had not enjoyed a minute of action for Spurs this season until the Carabao Cup quarter-final tie with Manchester United in December. The 28-year-old has since made two Premier League appearances, clocking 85 minutes. This has marked quite the turn of events, as the defender looked destined to leave the club in January.

It can still happen now, though. The Spanish international is eligible to agree a pre-contract with an overseas club, having entered the final six months of his deal at Tottenham, which would likely be very rewarding for him financially.

SC Braga are the new entrant for Reguilon’s services as per Ben Jacobs, but as Big Ange has no fit left-back available barring him, Spurs will need to come up with a creative solution as soon as possible. Whether the Hotspur Way chiefs take a financial hit and keep Reguilon or risk the squad by accepting a paltry fee potentially from Braga will be an interesting watch.
