Tottenham set to battle Chelsea for the signing of Ipswich Town star Liam Delap in the summer
Tottenham Hotspur have been looking to bring in a new striker for the second successive transfer window, as Daniel Levy tries to add a reliable backup to Dominic Solanke.
Spurs broke their transfer record during the past summer transfer window by signing Dominic Solanke from Premier League rivals Bournemouth. While Solanke has performed well, he has not had enough rest and recovery period owing to Richarlison’s injury problems. This has perhaps frustrated the chiefs at the Hotspur Way as they are looking beyond Richarlison and trying to bring in a new striker to rest and rotate with their club-record acquisition.
Paris Saint-Germain forward Randal Kolo Muani has been heavily linked with a move to White Hart Lane in recent weeks. It is understood that chairman Daniel Levy and technical director Johan Lange flew to Paris to try and negotiate a deal to bring the Frenchman to North London.
Another striker who has emerged as a target for Tottenham is Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap. The young centre-forward left Manchester City to join newly promoted Ipswich Town during the summer transfer window. He has been leading the Tractor Boys’ survival charge with eight goals and two assists in 19 appearances, catching the eye with his pace, power, physicality, aerial ability and work ethic.

It is not surprising that Liam Delap now finds himself on the radars of high-profile Premier League clubs. According to reputed journalist Ben Jacobs, Chelsea are the early frontrunners for the Ipswich Town star’s signature in the summer but Tottenham should not be discounted in the race.
“Don’t discount Tottenham, they have been very impressed with Delap as everyone has been this season, it’s eight Premier League goals and don’t just look at his goals you look at his hold-up play, the physicality, the hard work he does for his team off the ball, the intelligence and the monster mentality we know Ange Postecoglou likes,” Ben Jacobs said on Last Word On Spurs podcast.
“So, keep an eye on Delap, there will be several Premier League and Europe clubs in the mix. Chelsea are the early front runners but Tottenham are not to be discounted.”
Delap has quickly become a household name in the Premier League with Ipswich after failing to break into the star-studded Man City side. He has had loan spells in the Championship with Stoke City, Preston North End and Hull City but none of those worked out quite well.

At Ipswich, though, Kieran McKenna has managed to get the best out of the burly Winchester-born talent, who has already netted big goals against Aston Villa, West Ham, Tottenham, Chelsea and Fulham (home and away) this season. He is an extremely talented striker with massive potential, as evidenced by his performances at Portman Road.

As per Jacobs, Spurs have been impressed by Delap in his breakout Premier League season. Having said that, if the North Londoners fail to land Kolo Muani on loan or any other centre-forward this month, we may try testing Ipswich’s resolve with a cheeky bid for their star striker. If not, our club must prioritise the England under-23 international’s signature in the summer.
