New York City defender Christian McFarlane “will be formally announced” as a Manchester City player this month, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The journalist originally broke the story back in October but he now says he expects a press release confirming the transfer very soon:
“All documents are signed for 2007 born talented LB Christian McFarlane to join Manchester City. It will be formally announced during the January window.”
McFarlane was already part of the City Football Group so getting the move wrapped up would have been pretty straightforward.
What do City fans need to know about the player?
McFarlane was born in Basildon but he came through New York City’s academy before making his first team debut in the second round of the US Open Cup back in April last year.
The fullback went on to make his first appearance for NYC in MLS as a substitute during the 3-2 defeat to Colombus Crew in June. He has gone on to play 13 senior games.
At international level, McFarlane has switched back and forth between playing for the United States and England, having recently played for the Three Lions’ Under 18s in a friendly against Poland in November.
McFarlane will not be the only player arriving at the Etihad in January
It’s expected to be a very busy month in the transfer market for the Cityzens. In addition to McFarlane, the club are reportedly looking to bring at least three other signings.
They are currently in talks with Palmeiras about signing another young defender – Vitor Reis. The 18-year-old could cost around €40m (£33.5m).
Negotiations with Lens are taking place as the club hope to win the battle for Uzbek international Abdukodir Khusanov, while discussions are being held with Eintracht Frankfurt regarding a potential deal for forward Omar Marmoush.
