Former Everton boss David Moyes could be set for a sensational return to Goodison Park after Sean Dyche was dismissed from his duties three hours before the FA Cup win over Peterborough
David Moyes is being considered for a dramatic return to Everton following Sean Dyche’s dismissal just hours before their FA Cup win over Peterborough United. The Premier League strugglers have just one win in their last 11 league matches, with their most recent victory a 4-0 win against Wolves at the beginning of December.
Despite goalless draws with Arsenal and Chelsea, and a 1-1 draw with Manchester City recently, Dyche had found himself under increasing pressure. He was eventually dismissed just hours before his team faced League One Peterborough in the third round of the FA Cup at Goodison Park.
Club captain Seamus Coleman and Under-18s coach Leighton Baines took temporary charge of the squad on Thursday, as goals from Beto and Iliman Ndiaye secured a place in the next round. Meanwhile, former Toffees boss Moyes has been in discussions with the club’s owners, The Friedkin Group, and could return to the club as early as this weekend.

It’s hoped they will announce a new manager before Everton’s next match against Aston Villa on Wednesday (January 15), and the Scotsman could be the ideal choice for the short term. Moyes, who left West Ham at the end of last season, managed the Merseysiders between 2002 and 2013, but confessed he doesn’t want to continuously be in jobs where there’s a relegation battle at stake.
In an interview with Sky Sports last month, the 61-year-old said: “I don’t want to be taking jobs where I have to scrap all the time and be round the bottom of the league. Most of the time I was at Everton, we were competing for European positions. The last four years at West Ham, three of them have been in Europe.
“I like to think I can do a job at a level rather than just avoiding relegation. I will wait on the right opportunity and if it doesn’t come, I’ll be happy where I am at the moment.”
Despite these intentions, it seems he’s gearing up for another rescue mission at Goodison Park as Everton gear up for their stadium move later this year. Here, we have offered a glimpse into Moyes’ past, including his wife’s advice during his previous spell in charge and the financial gains of his football career.
What is David Moyes’ net worth?
According to Celebrity Net Worth, Moyes has earned upwards of £20.2million ($25m) throughout his career as both a footballer and a manager. The Scotsman has been in charge at Manchester United, Real Sociedad, Sunderland and West Ham, where he won the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2023.
Moyes parted ways with the London club following the conclusion of 2023/24 season, with Julen Lopetegui stepping in as his successor. The Spaniard was also handed his own marching orders this week, paving the way for Graham Potter to take charge.
The former Everton coach, who has been honoured as Manager of the Year three times during his tenure with the Toffees, is renowned for leading the club to consistently high league finishes. His most notable achievement was in the 2004/05 season when Everton secured a 4th place finish.
Under Moyes’ leadership, the team also had a brief stint in the Champions League and reached the FA Cup final in the 2008/09 season.
Wife Pamela’s nine-word widsom at Everton
Moyes previously shared a nine-word piece of advice from his wife Pamela that kept him motivated at Everton in the past. In a interview with The Times during the 2008/09 season, after signing a five-year contract extension, he opened up about his commitment to the Toffees. Despite financial constraints, he felt his mission with the club was “unfinished” and was determined to persevere – bolstered by Pamela’s encouragement.

Moyes said: “I always have belief. I do see things changing here and I think this is the right club for me just now. I see this as an unfinished job. I’ve helped make this club better and I don’t want to say, ‘it’s time to give up on Everton’ far from it. This is the time we need to pull together to get through this little period because, if we can, we’re not too far from kicking on.”
He attributed his renewed passion to his wife’s sage advice, adding: “My wife said to me, ‘get your contract signed and get on with it’. People were starting to think it had something to do with uncertainty over my future, using it as an excuse. ‘Just get on with it’ very Scottish advice.”
Preston mansion sold for £4.3m
Since retiring from playing at Preston North End in 1998 and stepping into the managerial role at the club that same year, it made sense for Moyes to have a residence near the city. However, the ex-manager actually acquired the property while at the helm of Everton, and the Lancashire Post reported that he sold it to a wealthy family for £4.3m back in 2019.
Reports state that Moyes snapped up the property in 2006 from ex-Preston North End director Sean Keogh for a sum in the region of £3.6m. Keogh had secured the home in 2001 for approximately £2.3m, and since then, various enhancements have only escalated its market value.
Situated in Haighton, close to Preston, the estate sprawls across 76 acres. In 2021, local council officers approved the construction of an annexe complete with a swimming pool and gym by the current owners – further improving the property’s appeal in the real estate market.
Constructed in 1820, this stately home has been a sanctuary for a growing family for more than two centuries. It features seven bedrooms and classic Georgian architecture.
