Graham Potter replaced Julen Lopetegui as the new West Ham United head coach on Thursday.
Julen Lopetegui oversaw a disastrous six-month spell in charge of West Ham, and Graham Potter has now been tasked with cleaning up the Spaniard’s mess that he left behind.
Potter has already highlighted the need to bolster his ranks in the transfer window this month.
And he will need to bring at least two top-class players into the club.
The additions of players like Jonathan David and Douglas Luiz would help us massively.
Whether or not David Sullivan adequately backs Potter in the transfer market remains to be seen.
Even if we don’t sign anyone, I’m confident that Potter will be able to extract more from the current crop of players than Lopetegui was able to do.
That said, there were some really scary parallels between the two managers’ first games in charge of West Ham.
Parallels between Graham Potter and Julen Lopetegui’s first games
I think we can all safely say that the first-half of Friday night’s defeat to Villa was the best we have played all season long.
Sure, we ran out of gas in the final 20 minutes, but there were so many exciting facets of our play on display.
I expect the road ahead to be bumpy, but the rewards that await us will be spectacularly lucrative.
Despite the team’s huge improvement with Potter in charge, there were still a few eerie coincidences at Villa Park last night.
So, both Potter and Lopetegui faced Aston Villa for their first competitive game in charge of the Hammers.
But what about this…both matches ended as 2-1 wins for Villa.
That’s not all though! Lucas Paqueta scored West Ham’s goals in both games and Amadou Onana scored Villa’s first goal in both matches as well…both from corners!
That really is a quite unbelievable list of coincidences isn’t it!
Let’s hope that that is where the parallels between Graham Potter and former West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui end though!
I noticed huge improvements during our 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.
And I’m convinced that great things lie in wait for us, if we all stick by Potter and allow him the time he needs to succeed at the London Stadium.
Graham Potter is on another level entirely to Julen Lopetegui when it comes to coaching a team in my opinion.
It’s very much onwards and upwards for us now.
