Tottenham have been linked with a loan move for Juventus misfit Douglas Luiz
Tottenham Hotspur have been looking to bolster Ange Postecoglou’s options in the middle of the park, and several midfielders are on their radar. One of them is Juventus’ Douglas Luiz.
Spurs have been presented with an opportunity to sign Douglas Luiz on loan from Juventus after it emerged that the midfielder was no longer a part of Thiago Motta’s plans. The Brazilian international moved to Juventus in a £42.3m deal from Aston Villa at the end of June, which also saw Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea move in the opposite direction to Villa Park.
However, the 26-year-old has struggled to impress in Serie A since making that big-money move. He has struggled for minutes under Thiago Motta while also spending almost two months on the sidelines with a muscle injury. This has limited Luiz to only two starts in Serie A thus far, with the likes of Khephren Thuram, Manuel Locatelli, Weston McKennie and Teun Koopmeiners ahead of him in the pecking order.
-> Aston Villa only want loan for Tottenham midfield target labelled ‘disaster’ at current club
After being branded a “disaster” at Juventus, the South American is looking for a way out of this transfer window. Now, the Daily Mirror journalist Darren Lewis has tipped Tottenham to make a move for Luiz on loan before the transfer window slams shut.
When asked by co-host Jamie Brown of Last Word on Spurs podcast whether Spurs do need to address the midfield unit, Darren Lewis stated:
“I know for a fact that Douglas Luiz would be open to a move on loan this month. He is another one who would improve the depth in the Tottenham midfield.
“Douglas Luiz whose home record in particular for Villa was terrific. He was scoring goals for fun from the midfield as well as he’s got a terrific distribution, he is tough in the tackle. Arsenal at one stage wanted to sign him but they were priced out of it. If he is available on loan then again that’s another one that I think Spurs should be all over.”

The North Londoners have a certain lack of depth in the midfield area given their failure to replace experienced duo Giovani Lo Celso and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg following their departures in the previous summer transfer window. The Hotspur Way chiefs did well to bring in fresh talents Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, but Big Ange could do with some experience at the heart of his midfield.

Luiz, in that regard, would be ideal. He would instantly enhance Tottenham’s starting XI as well as midfield depth. The Brazilian can operate as a No.6 and 8, making him a brilliant option to compete with the likes of Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur. Going purely by his displays at Villa, the Rio de Janeiro-born talent would be a straight upgrade on Bissouma.
Keeping these factors in mind, Daniel Levy and Co. must not hesitate to thrash out a loan deal for Luiz and bring him back to the Premier League.
