Paul Merson gave his take on the Everton’s decision to sack Sean Dyche and bring back David Moyes
Paul Merson doesn’t think the appointment of David Moyes will be enough to save Everton from relegation. The Sky Sports pundit and former Arsenal star thinks the return of Moyes is not a big enough change to allow the Toffees to pull clear of danger.
Moyes returns to Goodison Park with Everton just one point above the relegation places and with the Toffees having scored just 15 goals in 19 matches this season.
The Scot replaces Sean Dyche after the former Burnley boss was sacked by Everton’s new owners, the Friedkin Group, after overseeing just three victories this season.

Everton fans had watched the side toil throughout the season and they had failed to score in eight of their past 10 Premier League matches.
Merson, speaking during a round table discussion about Everton’s managerial change on Sky Sports, praised Dyche for the job he did but says Moyes won’t be able to implement changes big enough to save the club.
He said: “Personally, I’m not an Everton fan but from a distance I’d say he (Dyche) has done an amazing job there. But every Everton fan who goes every week will probably be shouting at the telly now saying ‘you didn’t have to watch this’
“I understand that, but I’ve watched them enough. He’s thick skinned, like David Moyes is. I was up there (at Goodison) to watch them the other week against Chelsea. It was dire. I talked to a couple of Everton fans after and they sad it was like that every week.
“But I don’t see it changing. I see Ipswich Town having a go, scoring goals, getting results. But I’m worried. I’m a big fan of Sean Dyche. I think he’s done a great job getting results, he does what he says on the tin.
“I know we hear him say that if he had better players, he’d play a different way, but he’s been in football 15 years as a manager. He’s played the same way every time. At Burnley he didn’t go and get a number 10 who has flair or a free spirit. He’s always played the same way. That’s been his problem and the fans have gone sour.
“But he should walk away proud of what he’s done. He kept them up last year when they looked like they were well down.”
Asked whether he thought Everton would now stay up, he added: “No. I’ve seen Everton too many times. They’ve scored one goal. What’s he going to do? They’ve got the same players. It’s exactly the same team. And the fixtures ain’t good.”
