Since he was 24-years-old, Manuel Neuer has been the one and only option for Bayern Munich at the goalkeeper position. Sven Ulreich (2017/18) and Yann Sommer (2023) filled in during extended injury spells, but there was never a doubt when Neuer returned to the pitch.
Neuer will turn 39 this March. Neuer is still playing at a decent level but has lost a step in regards to his reaction and anticipation speed. This has forced Bayern to scour the continent for Neuer’s future replacement.
Florian Plettenberg reports that Koln’s Jonas Urbig is available for relatively cheap.
Jonas Urbig is aware of FC Bayern’s interest and can imagine a summer transfer to become Manuel Neuer’s backup, should Daniel Peretz be loaned out. Bayern consider Urbig one of the biggest German talents in his position. There have been no negotiations between the clubs yet. 1. FC Köln currently value him at €6–8m, though the price is not yet finalised. The 21-y/o is under contract at [Koln] until 2026.
Urbig is an intriguing prospect who has played well for both club and country. As a German international who has spent his entire career in the lower Bundesliga divisions, Urbig is a culture fit. However, it would be ideal to have a backup goalkeeper who already has first division experience. That was the big knock on Alexander Nübel at a similar age.
