Arsenal have a growing interest in Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres on top of their interest in Benjamin Sesko, but a summer move is still preferable to the club.
Miguel Delaney reports for the Independent that Arsenal’s hand may be forced into the transfer market in the wake of Sunday night’s injury to Gabriel Jesus, and there are a few players on the club’s shortlist.
Mikel Arteta reportedly loves Nico Williams of Athletic Club, though the player’s wage demands are very high.
The club also reportedly have a growing interest in Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, as well as RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko. But signing Gyokeres now would require an £80m investment, and Arsenal would rather spend that money in the summer.
The Telegraph have previously reported that Gyokeres will be available for £63m in the summer, but that Sporting will hold to his €100m (£84m) release clause in the January window.
Arsenal deciding to sign the player now would mean effectively committing £20m+ for six months of matches, plus wages on top of that.
Any Arsenal fan will probably tell you that it’s worth the investment, with plenty to play for in the Premier League and Champions League and the team in dire need of a goalscorer. But it’s unlikely the club’s owners will see things in the same way.
For the time being, the club seem a way off any kind of signing in forward areas, with Arteta admitting on Sunday that it’s out of his hands.
