Arsenal prioritise Viktor Gyökeres transfer amid injury crisis, with Bryan Mbeumo also in contention
Arsenal are reportedly edging closer to activating Viktor Gyökeres‘ £84 million release clause at Sporting CP, as their need for a striker intensifies following Gabriel Jesus’ ACL injury.
The Swedish forward, who has been prolific in Portugal with 32 goals and six assists in 30 appearances this season, has long been on Mikel Arteta’s radar. Now, the Gunners appear ready to commit to the hefty price tag to secure a January transfer.
While Gyökeres’ release clause presents a significant financial challenge, reports suggest Arsenal are willing to pay the premium to avoid waiting until the summer, when the striker is expected to be available for £63 million.
Sporting’s firm stance on his valuation complicates matters, but Arsenal’s dire need for a central striker could justify the additional £20 million expenditure.
The question surrounding Gyökeres remains whether his exceptional form in Portugal can translate to the Premier League immediately. However, his physicality, technical ability, and clinical finishing have drawn comparisons to established Premier League strikers, making him a compelling option for a team desperate to maintain their title challenge.
In addition to Gyökeres, Arsenal are reportedly monitoring Bryan Mbeumo, Brentford’s versatile forward, as an alternative or even complementary signing, although bringing both in during the January window is highly unlikely.
Mbeumo, who has 13 goals and four assists this season and is proven in the Premier League, offers a different skill set with his ability to operate on the right flank or in central attacking roles.
The Cameroonian international’s contract runs until 2026, but Brentford may consider cashing in to maximise his value.
Arteta’s approach reflects the urgency of Arsenal’s situation. Securing Gyökeres now would not only strengthen their current campaign but also prevent competition from rivals in the summer.
