David Moyes is due to promote head of academy goalkeeping David Lucas to a first-team role as he continues to shape an Everton backroom team that will be re-assessed in the summer
David Moyes is lining up David Lucas as Everton’s new goalkeeping coach for the coming months. Currently head of academy goalkeeping at the Blues, Lucas would step up to the first team to replace Billy Mercer, who left Everton alongside Sean Dyche and his backroom team earlier this month.
Lucas enjoyed a long career as a keeper, during which he played under Moyes at Preston North End. The 47-year-old moved behind the scenes following his retirement and joined the Blues in 2021 following a long stint coaching at Fleetwood Town.
Moyes spoke with Everton number one Jordan Pickford over the decision, with the England international happy with the appointment.

The move is part of his work to construct a backroom team to help the new boss through to the end of the season, when he will then seek to take a longer-term view on some positions.
Billy McKinlay, his assistant at West Ham United and Real Sociedad, joined up with Moyes at Finch Farm last week, where work continued with Leighton Baines, who has moved up from his role leading the Under-18s.
Alan Irvine, another trusted Moyes colleague, is due to secure his return to Everton and join up with the team this week while the search for a set-piece coach is ongoing.
Speaking ahead of Everton’s game with Tottenham Hotspur, Moyes confirmed former Liverpool player Charlie Adam is among those being considered for the role.
Adam, who was manager of League Two Fleetwood until last month, has spoken publicly of his eagerness to work under a manager as experienced as Moyes as he looks to build his coaching and managerial career.
