Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne says the Premier League champions are not focused on catching Liverpool at the top of the table.
Pep Guardiola’s side thrashed Ipswich 6-0 at the weekend but they are still 12 points behind the leaders, having played a game more. Asked about his team’s recent form, De Bruyne said the main goal is simply to win more games:
“I don’t think we need to look at Liverpool for the moment, you know. We just need to try and do a better job and get more wins on the board, and obviously, we have a big game in Paris now.
“We’ve not really got the time to think about that. The goal is to win as many games as possible. We know we dropped too many points.”
De Bruyne is getting back to his best
The Belgian international has had his season blighted by a groin problem that has prevented him from playing at 100% capacity.
However, De Bruyne has said that he is feeling more like his old self and his performances in recent matches reflect that. He now has four assists in his last 3 league appearances.
City’s upcoming fixture list
As De Bruyne points out, the priority for Guardiola and his team will be to maintain this recent improvement over the coming days and weeks. They have a tough fixture coming up in the Champions League as they take on PSG in Paris.
This weekend, they host Chelsea in the Premier League prior to matches versus Club Brugge and second-place Arsenal. Next month, they will also play Newcastle, Liverpool and Tottenham.
It’s certainly not the kindest of schedules and De Bruyne will know that recent results won’t mean a whole lot if they don’t manage to build on it with more victories in upcoming games.
