Silly season for the rumor mill is in full swing as the January transfer window has been open for over a week by now, and Bayern Munich is still in the midst of trying to sort out key contract extensions. Jamal Musiala, Joshua Kimmich, and Alphonso Davies are the key three players that are being worked on by the club’s front office, as all three currently have contracts that are set to expire this summer.
Recent reports have suggested all three players are open to and close to signing new deals at Bayern, but Davies has been linked with a summer move to Real Madrid for quite some time now. The rumor timeline linking the Canadian international with the La Liga giants dates back to last season under Thomas Tuchel when he was not quite at his best.
So far this season, Davies has looked far more like the 2019/20 season version of himself that had him in the conversation for best left back in the world — not too bad for someone who deployed his traits as a left winger for the Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS.
Vincent Kompany, knowing full well there have been a plethora of rumors linking Davies with a summer exit to Madrid, recently offered his praises for how well Bayern’s “Roadrunner” has been performing so far this season. “From a purely sporting perspective, what Phonzy has achieved for us is clear. He’s a player who is making progress and whose performances are important. I’m sure that he will get even better. What he’s doing now is good, and he will do even better in the future,” the Belgian manager explained in the press conference ahead of the Bundesliga clash at Borussia Mönchengladbach (via @iMiaSanMia).
The most recent reports have suggested that Real Madrid are willing to offer Davies up to €20m gross per year, but that he is also close to agreeing to a new deal at Bayern. The way he has been playing so far this season has certainly upped the ante for both clubs, but it’s a balancing act for Max Eberl, Christoph Freund, and the rest of the front office as they need to be able to offer appropriate money to, not only Davies, but Kimmich and Musiala as well.
