In previous interviews given during his several pre-match press conferences, Graham Potter has been the consummate pro, batting away questions about new players by affirming that it is his job to work with the players he has.
Yesterday in the post-match interview on sky there was just a little twinkle in his eye and a chink in that inscrutable demeanour whilst admitting that of course the January window is not straightforward, he was more upbeat about West Ham’s chances of bringing in new talent in the last week of the window.
Live on Sky, he responded to a question about transfer activity:
“It’s a complicated window. . It’s not straightforward but if we can do something we will”. Genuinely more forthcoming and certainly sending out a more optimistic message than last week. He hinted that injured players such as Evan Ferguson won’t be on the list though, as “Players need to be available and ready to come in and help straight away”.
It also suggests out of form or players who don’t have current match fitness won’t serve any useful purpose – we’ve seen the likes of Kalvin Phillips loaned to the Hammers with disastrous consequences and I just wonder whether that suggests he’s not warming to the idea of an out-of-favour Marcus Rashford joining to rebuild his match fitness and his career at the expense of a game-ready alternative.
