The winter transfer window is drawing closer to it close and Bayern Munich is still waiting on the three key contract situations for Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies and Joshua Kimmich. The club has remained confident that the trio of players with current contracts set to expire this summer will all ink new, long-term deals at some point this year.
Because they are all in the final year of their current contracts, they can technically sign pre-contracts with other clubs to leave as free agents in the summer, let alone start talking to interested clubs. For Kimmich, he has recently been linked with entertaining offers from Real Madrid, having also been linked with a bevy of other clubs across Europe.
Despite any outside noise there may be with Kimmich, Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund recently affirmed that he is confident the club’s number 6 will put pen to paper on a new deal. “This is a fundamental decision in his career. He knows exactly what he has at Bayern – the club, the team, and the coach. He feels extremely comfortable here. I’m positive that he will ultimately decide to stay with us,” Freund told Sky and also spoke about when to expect a decision. We don’t have a specific timeframe, but we don’t want to drag it out indefinitely,” Freund recently explained, as per Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg.
As per Sport Bild’s Christian Falk, if Kimmich does not sign an extension with Bayern, his most likely destinations are either Real Madrid or Liverpool. Regardless of what winds up happening with the player between now and the end of the season, Real Madrid would like to stay in touch with the player.
After Bayern’s 2-1 win at SC Freiburg over the weekend, when Kimmich was asked aabout his contract situation and links to Madrid, he said he did not want to provide an update and that he does not want to have to be asked about it every couple of days. He prefers everything to be handled behind the scenes and away from the public eye — a hard feat to accomplish as a high-profile player for FC Hollywood.
Despite the confidence that Freund has, which is more than likely shared by board member for sport Max Eberl, the clock is ticking and the more time that passes, the more it weakens the optics for the club. The deal needs to get done as soon as possible, especially as it coincides with the major contracts of Davies and Musiala. Announcing extensions for the trio of players would be absolutely massive for the club and its future.
