West Ham United are allegedly eyeing up a move to sign a Premier League player on a huge salary in the January window.
And it could end up being a disastrous transfer, if West Ham do indeed carry it out.
Graham Potter faces a vitally important week in charge of the Hammers, with the January window set to slam shut this time next week.
He has to bring at least two top-class players to the London Stadium within the next seven days, it really is as simple as that.
A flurry of transfer activity is now expected at West Ham, after the arrival of Kyle Macaulay from Chelsea.
There is no time to waste now when it comes to getting some bodies through the door.
However, the latest name being linked with a move to the Hammers hardly inspires confidence.
West Ham eye big money January window move
It goes without saying that the January transfer window will be a vitally important one for the Hammers.
Potter desperately requires reinforcements in pretty much every single department of the pitch.
However, one area where we’re pretty well-stocked is the left wing-back department.
Emerson Palmieri and Ollie Scarles have that particular position nailed down.
However, Potter is said to be on the hunt for further reinforcements.
According to a report from The Daily Mail (print edition January 27th, page 59), West Ham are keen to bring Ben Chilwell to the London Stadium before the January transfer window slams shut this time next week.
Chilwell, who earns £225k-a-week at Stamford Bridge (Salary Sport) has experienced terrible problems with injuries over the past few years.
The 28-year-old has missed 102 games for Chelsea since the start of the 2021/22 season due to a combination of knee, hamstring and ACL injuries (Transfermarkt).
However, that’s not the main reason why I think we should avoid a move to sign Chilwell from Chelsea this month…
West Ham don’t need Ben Chilwell, we have Ollie Scarles
The 19-year-old was truly sensational for the Hammers against Aston Villa on Sunday.
To me, he looks like he’s ready to start every single Premier League game for us now, and I’m convinced that he’ll be a key player for us going forward.
Scarles looked every bit a Premier League star at Villa Park.
His pace, energy and athleticism offers us something completely different down the left hand flank.
Ollie Scarles is undoubtedly a future star, I’m convinced of that.
West Ham signing Ben Chilwell in the January transfer window would not only be needless, but it would also stunt Scarles’ growth by blocking his path to the first-team.
This is a transfer we really need to avoid in my opinion.
