Todd Boehly told Chelsea’s stars their season was ’embarrassing’ after the home defeat by Brighton — and manager Frank Lampard must now try to lift morale for tonight’s defining Champions League clash with Real Madrid.
The Chelsea owner made his way to the dressing room on Saturday and addressed the squad once interim boss Lampard had delivered his post-match team talk.
As well as expressing his disappointment at how Chelsea’s season had panned out, Boehly tried to lift Lampard’s players ahead of Tuesday’s quarter-final second leg, in which the Blues must overturn a 2-0 deficit.
With Chelsea 11th in the Premier League after third-round exits in both domestic cups, the Champions League represents their last chance to rescue the campaign.
Boehly visiting the dressing room is not unusual, but the nature of his message raised eyebrows. Yet Lampard said: ‘I am comfortable with that. I had my things to say after the game.

Fans were furious with Boehly at the final whistle and he made his way down to the dressing room afterwards
‘There is maybe some criticism of our old owner of not coming to games and being around that wasn’t always true.
‘I remember moments as a player of owners first coming into dressing rooms, I remember being happy. I don’t think it’s a bad thing.
‘I had my things to say, if an owner wants to come in and be positive and speak to the players, they can do that. No problem with that, it shows passion and that’s the first thing that I like.’
In Boehly’s first year at the club, Chelsea have spent big on the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk and Wesley Fofana but there has been little benefit with the team finding themselves 35 points behind leaders Arsenal.
The Blues have splashed out more than £600m but are currently languishing down in 11th place and look set to miss out on European football altogether next season.
