West Ham’s chief leads search for new top man
More and more news is pouring out of the club over West Ham’s decision to appoint a director of football and possibly manager!
And as suggested by ClaretandHugh when breaking the news exclusively last week, David Moyes will have a big decision to make on his future when it happens.
The Guardian has revealed that the search is being conducted by the club’s most powerful figure – the largest shareholder David Sullivan.
He is now the club’s main man and will be responsible for finding a new manager if Moyes leaves for whatever reason.
There is disquiet over how West Ham have fared in the league. They are not safe from relegation after losing to Brentford on Sunday and there have been complaints over the style.
West Ham are monitoring Graham Potter, Brendan Rodgers and Celtic’s Ange Postecoglou as future managers. There are indications that Paulo Fonseca will spend another season at Lille. At least one other candidate is lurking in the background according to The Guardian.
Moyes’s future could depend on whether West Ham win the Europa Conference League. They are 2-1 up before the second leg of their semi-final at AZ Alkmaar on Thursday.
The manager could earn himself another season if he brings West Ham their first major trophy since 1980. Winning the Conference League would also earn qualification into the Europa League. That may be why he prioritised the game over yesterday’s!
But the arrival of a director of football who would take charge of new arrivals could see him decide to call it a day. Moyes made it clear when returning he wanted to be in charge of transfers so anything is now possible.
