Moyes can seal his Hammers history
David Moyes and his boys have the chance to make Hammers history tonight, by taking to club into the Conference League final. Following Manchester City’s Champions League win, West Ham have the unique opportunity to make it an English Euro double.
The Hammers hold a 2-1 lead over Alkmaar and anything other than a loss will see the Irons into the final. For so many reasons this feels like a truly historic moment for West Ham.
Manager David Moyes is the Premier League‘s longest serving manager but he’s never won a trophy. This is his chance to to make some Hammers history, but to also have something to show for a long career.
I get the feeling that Moyes also understands the significance of this competition to his legacy. By resting players against Brentford he demonstrated that he was going all out to win the Europa Conference League.
Over the years I’ve heard managers such as Moyes and Sam Allardyce try to convince themselves about the merits of their records. They would both have us believe that Premier League survival is a good barometer of a manager.
It’s all codswallop, and I don’t believe a word of it. Maintaining Premier League status suggests competence and that’s it. Truly outstanding football achievements are validated by trophies and now it’s time for Moyes to seize the moment.
Irrespective of what the future holds for the manager, a trophy win would enshrine him in Hammers folklore. I’m certain Moyes regrets the opportunity to win trophies at Manchester United was cut short.
Clearly he is a man who has the courage of his convictions and belief in his methods. Now is his chance to prove precisely that by getting West Ham into a final.
