West Ham boss David Moyes has delivered a frosty response to Michail Antonio comments and clarified the Gianluca Scamacca situation.
There has been a stream of claims about the future of Gianluca Scamacca at West Ham beyond this season.
When West Ham spent £35m to bring Scamacca to the London Stadium last summer it seemed like the perfect signing.
But after just 11 Premier League starts for the Hammers, the 6ft 5in Italian is being heavily linked with a move back to his homeland.
Striker Michail Antonio made some refreshingly honest if somewhat unwise and unhelpful comments about Scamacca’s situation this week.
Honest but somewhat unhelpful comments cause a stir
The Hammers forward said Scamacca is a ‘quality player’. But he opened a can of worms by adding that he is simply not a David Moyes player and needs a different manager to get the best out of his talents.
“I’m going to be honest with you lot, he’s actually quality,” Antonio said.
“He is a quality player. The problem is, he can’t play the way the gaffer plays.
“He needs a different type of manager to play his type of football. Yes, he’s alright (in terms of his English). He needs a manager who, he can be playing and other players can come off him and stuff like that.
“You can see that the ball comes into him and it sticks and he’s tidy. But how David Moyes plays is more like, if you’re up front you’re dealing with scraps and you’ve got to be more of a fighter. And that’s not him.”
West Ham boss David Moyes delivers frosty response to Michail Antonio comments and clarifies Gianluca Scamacca situation
Given West Ham are playing an Italian side in the Europa Conference League final, it was rather inevitable that one of the first questions Moyes was asked in his press conference was about Antonio’s comments on him and Scamacca.
Now West Ham boss Moyes has delivered frosty response to the Antonio comments and has clarified the Scamacca situation.
“I’ve got no issues with Gianluca,” Moyes said in his pre-Fiorentina presser.
“Gianluca is a terrific player, really good footballer, someone who we really like. But unfortunately he’s been hit with injuries for periods of this season.
“Michy has his own opinions,” Moyes added with a telling grimace.
“But we’re not getting into that.”
